Pizza, Tacos, and California Sun:

Why Rathgar’s "Revolution" is a Mood

If you follow my Bits & Bobs section, you know I’m always hunting for those "neighborhood locals" that serve world-class food without the pretension. After my recent deep dive into Bonobo in Smithfield, I decided to head just south of the city centre to Rathgar village.

The spot? The Revolution Pizza & Kitchen. They’ve been bringing a ray of Southern California sunshine to Dublin since 2014. Honestly, the vibe is exactly what you need on a slow Tuesday evening or a lazy Sunday brunch when you want to disappear from the world for an hour.

The Craft: Why It’s Worth the Trip

What I love about The Revolution is that they don’t take shortcuts. In my own work - whether I'm shooting B-roll for Box 55 or designing a new layout - I know that the small details make the final product. These guys get it:

  • The 72-Hour Dough: They don't just make dough; they respect it. It’s a 72-hour proofing process using Caputo 00 flour. The result is a crust that is light, airy, and has that perfect "leopard-spot" char.
  • The Ingredients: Everything is made fresh to order using the best seasonal toppings they can get their hands on. They’ve moved on from their old cheese suppliers to focus on what works best for the current menu, ensuring the quality stays consistent with the "slow food" vibe.
  • The Meats: Sourced locally from O’Mahony Meats. Whether it’s the wild boar or the free-range chicken, you can taste the quality of a local supply chain that hasn't changed since they opened in 2014.

My Order:

If it’s your first time, don’t overthink it. Grab a stool and start with these:

  • The Pizza: Go for any of the signature 72-hour proofed pizzas. The long fermentation makes the crust incredibly light and airy with that perfect wood-fired char.
  • The Tacos: These are the soul of the menu. They use cornflour shells (completely gluten-free) stuffed with chargrilled meats or fish and topped with their house-made salsas.
  • The Drinks: Their recently developed cocktail menu is a game-changer. I highly recommend the epic spicy margaritas if you want that California sunshine vibe, or an espresso martini for a pick-me-up.
  • The Weekend Strategy: If you’re coming for Weekend Lunch (Sat & Sun, 12:00–15:00), pair a stacked burger or a vibrant salad with a bottomless mimosa or a coffee from Two Spots in Skerries.

Getting There (The Scenic Route)

Rathgar is nestled between Rathmines and Ranelagh. If you're coming from Temple Bar, it’s a quick 10-minute taxi. But if you want my advice? Grab a Dublin Bike. The cruise over through the leafy streets of D6 is part of the experience. If you’re not feeling the pedaling, the 14, 15, or 65 buses drop you right at the doorstep.
